Know more about the components of your Heat Exchanger Tube

It always helps to know more about the components of your heat exchangers so you will know how you can better take care of them and extend their life span. Heat Exchanger Tubes are plain and finned, external or internal.

The plain tube is used in the normal heat exchanger units while the finned tubes give an increased heat transfer surface. Another type is the duplex tube. It is a tube within a tube snugly fitted by drawing the outer tube onto the inner tube. It is useful in conditions where the shell side fluid is not compatible with the material satisfactory for the tube side fluid.

The outside diameters of the tubes vary from 6 mm to 40 mm. The thickness generally varies depending on the materials of construction and diameters. Tube lengths also vary from 0.5, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, and 6 meters. They are laid out either on an equilateral triangular pitch or a square pitch. The minimum pitch is 1.25 times the outside diameter of tubes. When tubes are on the square pitch a minimum cleaning lane of 6.5 mm is provided.

Because of their high heat transfers, the use of finned Heat Exchanger Tubes is widely accepted. These are the most commonly transverse low fin type. The fin height is about 1.5 mm, with about 7 to 8 fins per cm tube length. It is usual to reduce the tube diameter during the finning process so that the fin diameter is confined within the limits of the initial stock tube diameter. In some applications such as condensers and evaporators, a roped tube surface with appropriate groove depth, pitch, and helix angle appears more suitable due to good drainage characteristics.

Once the heat exchanger tubes are broken, the most common methods of fixing them consist of expanding the ends of the tubes located in the tube sheet holes by means of a rotating, expanding tool. The holes in the tube sheet are drilled undersize and are then reamed to a diameter slightly larger than the outside diameter of the tube. They are sometimes soldered or brazed into the tube sheet holes when the tubes have a small diameter.

Proper cleaning and maintenance of heat exchanger tubes ensure a longer span of your unit and helps in lower energy consumption.
